Textile village Großschönau
When Großschönau decided to take a part in the national competition "Theme villages in Saxony", no one had to thought long and hard about the content of the application:
In no other German city has been damask weaved for such a long time and in such amount.
In unique ‘Damask and terry museum’ can visitors see damask weaving tradition dating back to 1666. Damascus takes for half the textile industry in Großschönau. The second half stands for fluffy towels, bathrobes and other terry products. Once again, Großschönau looks back to the oldest tradition in Germany. The first loom for terry towels was put into operation in 1856. Recent functional loom for this substance is one of the rarities of German Museum of Damascus and toweling, as well as working damask loom from 1835.
